The City of Kingston, the Hudson Valley Native American League and members of Muncie State, Isopos, and Ramabug Lenape hosted their first Winter Solstice and Wiping Out Tears concert on Wednesday, December 21, off Broadway’s City Hall.
The event opened with the filling of four sacred tubes representing all races, followed by an invitation in the Ceremony of the Four Directions. Monsi prayed Grandpa Paul Coyote Song Tobin’s Prayer. Subsequent mayor Steve Noble offered the city an apology for past grievances and called for longer, stronger relations and bringing more Native American culture to Kingston. A “wiping away of tears” ceremony was then held, during which those present stood next to each other and wiped away each other’s tears.
This traditional Native American celebration removes the hurt of the past, connects us to the earth and makes room for us to enter into a new, positive relationship with one another.
