Andrea Riseborough may not be a name that will ring many bells for the average movie buff.
But, chances are your favorite actor in that movie you love knows exactly who he is. And they want her to win an Oscar.
It’s, frankly, a strange story, beginning in October with the limited release of a small independent film called “To Leslie,” about what happens when a single mother wins the lottery and runs out of money. Riseborough plays the titular Leslie, in a performance widely praised by critics as some of the best job of his career.
And just last week, Riseborough was Oscar nominee for Best Actress, his first Oscar nomination.
But there are questions surrounding her nomination, which came after a very public push by multiple Hollywood stars, think Gwyneth Paltrow and Amy Adams. Now, without mentioning Riseborough or “To Leslie” specifically, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says it’s looking into this year’s campaign proceedings to make sure no rules are being broken. (It is forbidden to contact Academy members to promote a film or lobby for an award.)
