UM Alumnus, Native Artist Designs Griz Logo for Nike Event

MISSOULA — Graphic designer Benji Headswift felt it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when he was selected last year to create a Native American logo for the University of Montana’s entry in Nike N7 Programa national initiative that encourages indigenous youth to participate in sports and recreational activities.
A former UM student and member of the Northern Cheyenne (Só’taétane) tribe, Headswift has long incorporated indigenous traditions into his artistic creations. But this commission puts his work in the national spotlight that comes with the Nike N7 program, which has awarded more than $8 million to 270 communities and organizations through the sale of Native-inspired sportswear.
The Headswift logo will appear on the shooting jerseys of the Montana Men’s and Lady Griz basketball teams at Nike N7 games at Adams Center this season. Beneath the shooting jerseys, players will wear custom turquoise uniforms created by Nike. The Lady Griz game will take place at 2 pm on Saturday, January 28 and the men’s game will be at 7 pm on Saturday, February 4.
The officially licensed Nike Griz gear featuring the Headswift logo is now available online and at UM Bookstore, The M Store, Scheels, Fanatics and Dick’s Sporting Goods. As part of a Headswift solicitation, a portion of the proceeds will support the UM Kyiyo Pow Wow, one of the oldest student-run powwows in the country.
