Manhattan’s trendiest, tourist-filled neighborhoods have become increasingly terrorized by brazen thieves who are leaving shop workers stranded and scared.
Grand theft, or theft of $1,000 or more, has skyrocketed by more than 60% in Gotham City police stations in the past year, according to the latest statistics from the NYPD, and some business owners. blame lax state bail laws for dumping suspects on the streets to strike again.
“There is a real belief among criminals that they will get away with it,” Jim Giddon, whose Rothmans men’s clothing store in Gramercy was robbed twice in about a week by the same gang, told The Post.
The grand theft crisis is so severe that Mayor Eric Adams held a “summit” with business leaders at the Gracie Mansion earlier this month to deal with the spike in retail theft, though sources said he left the two-hour powwow after about 20 minutes.
“That doesn’t sound like much of a summit,” Giddon said.
Grand thefts have shot up about 27.6% citywide year-to-date over the same period in 2021, with the largest increase, 63.4 percent, in Midtown’s South Precinct, which includes Times Square, Grand Central Terminal and Madison Square Garden. That means 2,287 incidents this year versus 1,387 in 2021 for the Manhattan campus.
