Top award for Bassetlaw Museum in recognition of Pilgrim Fathers project

The 2021 Museum Volunteers for Learning Awards celebrate the work and achievements of museum volunteers across the UK, and the Bassetlow Museum were winners in the East Midlands category for a unique cultural exchange that shared the history, traditions, and nation of the Wampanoag, Native Americans, and their traditions. The project involved volunteers leading and assisting with several educational sessions for children throughout Bassetlaw, as well as cultural shows and performances that allowed people to learn about Native American culture, our shared history and to view the Wito pool, which still stands on the grounds of the Bassetlaw Museum.
Sam Glasswell, curator of the Bassetlaw Museum, said: “The Wampanoag perspective was a great project to engage with and bring to life in a more balanced story connected to the Mayflower Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people.
