S T. GEORGE – The 28th Annual Shivwits Toy Drive has expanded this year and is still receiving financial and toy donations through Christmas Day.
The annual toy drive and fundraiser will include children and members of other Utah tribes in addition to the Southern Utah Paiute Tribes, the Utah Paiute Indian Tribe, the Shivwits Band of Paiutes, the Cedar Band of Paiutes and the Kanosh of Paiute Indians.
Jim Sey, co-founder of the unit, said the response has been impressive in an update he gave while at M&S Turquoisewhere donations are received in downtown St. George.
The jewelry owner has contributed a lot of time and effort to this charity event each year.
“We’ve had very, very good responses,” Sey said. “It’s been interesting the last couple of years, we’ve had excess cash and we don’t like to hold on to it, so we’ve expanded it into a scholarship program.”
Sey said they had so many financial donations that they have more, which go to tribal members who are attending or planning to continue their education by attending colleges or specialized schools. Tribal council members from each tribe decide who needs additional financial support for educational activities. The “mini-scholarships”…
