‘SNL’ vets Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus reunite

Race relations in the United States these days they are not to laugh.
But Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris ask you to do just that with Netflix’s romantic comedy “You People” (airing Friday), about a likable Jewish boy named Ezra (Hill) who falls for a proud black girl named Amira (Lauren London).
The couple click, whether it’s making out under the covers or chatting about urban music and streetwear. their respective parents? Not that much. And therein lies the tension and comedy in this modern twist on “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?”
“We knew some things could be inflammatory,” says director Barris, creator of ABC’s “Black-ish,” who wrote the new movie with Hill. “So our actors had to have 10 toes in (the shoes of) their characters.”

Ezra’s overly awake parents are played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny. Amira’s parents, coldly played by Eddie Murphy and Nia Long, are devout Muslims who barely manage to keep their disgust at a simmer.
When the happy couple finally brings both sets of parents together for a get-acquainted dinner, Murphy and Louis-Dreyfus show off their considerable comedic chops, some of which they forged together as cast members on “Saturday Night Live” earlier in the 1980s.
