Sault tribe member appointed to Homeland Security council

st st. Marie – Sault Ste. The Mari of the Chippewa Indians were appointed to a newly formed Homeland Security Advisory Council.
On September 7, the Department of Homeland Security officially established the first Tribal Security Advisory Council. The council was created with the goal of strengthening relations between the Department of Homeland Security and tribal groups within the country.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N Mayorcas said in a press release announcing the creation of the council.
The council will officially begin operating within the Department of Homeland Security in January 2023 with a council of 15 members from tribal groups from across the country, including a representative from the Salt tribe. All fifteen members of the council have tribal heritage and currently hold positions in the government of their individual tribes.
Kimberly Hampton, member of Sault Ste. Mary was chosen from the Chippewa Indians and a member of the Tribal Board of Directors to represent the Salt Clan on the board. Hampton believes she is prepared for the position because she knows the community well and is familiar with the people in it.
