Since last June, there have been more than 70 auctions—international and domestic—selling potentially sensitive authentic American cultural items. The Association of American Indian Affairs educates buyers to avoid potentially corrupt and poor investments in potentially stolen Aboriginal art and cultural property.
The oldest nonprofit serving the Indian Country this week warned would-be collectors of an upcoming auction of nearly 400 Indigenous cultural items, at least one of which is believed to be fake, all likely stolen from Indigenous lands.
The Association of American Indian Affairs (AAIA) has identified at least 40 items that will be offered in the “American Indian and Tribal Artauctioned as “potentially sensitive items” in an alert sent March 14 to tribal states, bands or community members.
The online auction, conducted March 20-30 by Bonhams Skinner International Auctions, will feature a wide range of North American artifacts such as Northwest horn spoons and totems, California baskets, Navajo textiles, silver and turquoise jewelry, Hopi katsinas, Southwestern pottery and a collection of Extensive plains Indian beadwork, according to the auction company’s website.
