‘Portraits in Red’ in Newport draws attention to missing and murdered Indigenous people – Here is Oregon

On a gray February afternoon, nearly 100 visitors joined members of the Confederate Tribes of Siletz Indians in the mezzanine gallery of the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center in Newport. There, under the dark gaze of dozens of portraits of missing and murdered Indians, the tribesmen offered a blessing and called for an end to the violence and the beginning of healing.
The exhibit, “Portraits in Red,” is the work of Massachusetts artist Nayana LaFond, who began the series in 2020 after seeing a selfie posted on National Awareness Day. If I’m not painting a picture for the show, then I’m doing some kind of logistical work for it,” LaFond said. “It seems that this series is my job and the other job is my hobby.”
