Health care inequality among Native Americans in Arizona and across the country takes center stage
Every year, University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix Office of Justice, Diversity and Inclusion (delay) Organized by HealthMonth, a discovery series focusing on the health issues facing our diverse communities.
In conjunction with Native American Heritage Month—celebrated annually in November—this year’s slate of events included talks about the critical need for equitable access to care for Native people in Arizona, and across the United States.
“It is important for our learners to be educated about the health disparities indigenous patients face to provide better care; but just as important, it is critical for them to learn about the rich history, culture, and resilience of indigenous patients to develop relationships based on respect and trust,” Francisco Lucio, c.Associate Dean for OEDI.
Three talks, led by three Indigenous people representing different tribes, highlighted historical disparities in Indigenous health care and provided insights for impactful change.

For the first symposium, the faculty was joined by Alec Clack, MD/PhD candidate at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Sciences.
