At the Cedars Cultural Center in the West Bank, Ojibwe culture takes center stage. Joe Rainey is rehearsing one of his first shows in his hometown, which will showcase his musical evolution as well as his indigenous roots.

“Growing up in Minneapolis is the foundation of who I am and what I do. Going back to my neighborhood and performing something that I created privately with my friend, it’s a really special thing for me to perform for people who most likely saw me growing up here in the neighborhood,” Rennie said.
Rainey’s singing style is associated with Native American sacramental traditions, but her vocal background is more modern.
His muted melodies sound as old as his people, but instead of being accompanied by a drum circle, his vocals float on a bed of synthesized rhythms, samples from legendary old vocal recordings, and almost cinematic string arrangements.
“Unique. In his own lane. I know he’s been described as avant-garde. I don’t think there’s any word in the Ojibwe language to describe what the avant-garde is,” Rennie said.
