Fourteen students from Los Alamos High School’s Native American Culture Club participated in American Indian Day, “Paving the Way for the Future: Centralizing and Elevating Indigenous Voices,” in the New Mexico legislature.
The day began with a presentation that included an honor song, welcome address from the New Mexico Department of Indian Affairs, reading of the American Indian Day proclamation and remarks from Governor Michelle Logan Grisham, remarks from the tribal leadership and a dance performance.
Students toured the Roundhouse and visited the Governor’s office. They had the opportunity to meet with Senators Leo Jaramillo (District 5) and Brenda McKenna (District 9 and Nambe Pueblo). Senator Jaramillo invited the students to attend and encouraged them to become active in the legislative process. “It encouraged them to become student apprentices,” said Julie Dare, one of the trip’s sponsors and Los Alamos Public Schools liaison coordinator for Native American students and families. Also accompanying the group were Kimberly Engelking, sponsor of the LAHS Native American Culture Club, and Sigrid Worthman, reading specialist at LAPS.
