In 2007, Maury Miller legally changed his name to Black Eagle, the name given to him by his grandfather in Native American custom. But that didn’t change him for what he always was, a loving human being who made his community better.
Black-Eagle will be honored on January 28 at Kiana Lodge when he is presented with the Rex Brown Award and inducted into the Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame.
Graduated from East Bremerton High School in 1967, where he starred in football, track (ran 4:15 mile) and basketball, earned a master’s degree (consulting and computer science), worked in key corporate roles and finished his working life as deputy CEO Sukamish tribe.
His community service work should come as no surprise since his parents set the tone. Father Lee Miller was legendary for training and mentoring young children for many years in the kitsap community, and mother – Lorraine – worked as a government vocational rehabilitation consultant for the physically challenged and the mentally challenged.
“Our parents instilled in us to be respectful and to value other people and their opinions, even if you don’t agree with them,” says Black Eagle. “They said you also need to share your self, your physical self with them at any time. If you have something they can use, you give it to them.”
Black-Eagle has become a pretty good come-from-the-pee racer back into middle school and high school, if not for a serious neck…
