Rooted in clay: the spirit of Pueblo pottery is a rare exhibit curated by the Native American communities it represents. The project gives authority and voice to the Pueblo Pottery Collective, a group of more than 60 individual members from 21 tribal communities who have selected and written on artistically or culturally distinctive vessels from two major collections of Pueblo pottery: the Indian Arts Research Center of the School of Advanced Education. Research (SAR) in Santa Fe and the Vilcek Foundation in New York.
Pueblo pottery has long been exhibited and interpreted in the academic and museum worlds through singular, often generic viewpoints: as ethnographic remnants of the archaeological past, or as examples of fine art aligned with milestones in history. and western art culture.
