Wendy Red Star: Apsáalooke: Children of the Big-Beaked Bird opens at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art on November 12. Indigenous Peoples of America that focuses on the indigenous perspective rather than the typical stories told by non-indigenous scholars. An avid researcher, Red Star uses historical imagery and material culture as direct references for her photographs and installations.
At the center of the Great-billed Crow’s Children are photographs taken during the 1873, 1880, and early 20th century Crow Delegations that brought Crow chiefs to Washington, D.C. to meet with American officials to negotiate land and reservation borders. Red Star adds details and captions to these images that highlight the humanity and importance of leaders.
