Hays USD 489 committee looks at new logos but still split on Indian mascot

The rebranding committee remains divided over the potentially offensive nature of Hays High School’s Indian mascot.
The $489 Hays School District Rebranding Committee met for the first time Monday night.
The school district conducted a survey and found that the majority of respondents wanted to keep the Indian mascot. but, At a community meeting on November 15th And at Monday’s rebranding meeting, some members of the community said they believed the high school’s mascot should be changed.
The school district approved a bond issue in May and is in the process of building a new high school and will redesign the existing high school into a middle school.
Superintendent Ron Wilson said his desire is to see the district put the right label on those schools.
John Jensen, Justin’s advisor, is leading the rebranding discussions. He tried to focus the group on the “brave and true” lyrics from the high school fight song.
The members of the committee seem to agree that they liked the school’s colors, maroon and gold, and wanted to keep it.
Jenson submitted some potential logo choices that include brushes of maroon and gold, keeping the Indian name and using the “brave and real” look.
None of the options included the Indian head or the spearhead recently used by the Hays High football team…
