Nearly two decades ago, Sven Hakansson Jr. traveled from Kodiak to Harvard University’s Peabody Museum.
Peabody had invited Hakanson, then-executive director of the Aleutian Museum of Kodiak, and Roni Lind of Carlock to consult on the museum’s repatriation work in 2006. As they toured the museum, Hakanson’s kayak collection caught Hakanson’s attention. Once they finished conferring, Haakanson and Lind doubled down to look at the kayaks.
When they checked the items in the pantry, Lind invited Hakansson to look at something.
“So I went, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is Alutiiq Kayak,'” Hakansson recalled.
Spotting a rare kayak from one person was amazing. Håkansson said he knew of only seven such boats. This was previously owned The Peabody Museum for nearly 150 years.
else The week Harvard announced its kayak, On loan to the Kodiak Museum since 2016permanently there.
Haakanson and Lind’s discovery led to a long-running partnership between Peabody Museums and Alutiiq for kayak preservation. Peabody announced Tuesday that it has legally transferred the kayaks to the Aleutian Museum.
