Author Lee Child supports the Daily Express Give a Book campaign
Give A Book is a charity dedicated to promoting books and the joy of reading in the most difficult places. I started it after my husband, Simon Gray, died in 2008.
A playwright, novelist, and diary writer for The Smoking Diaries, Simon loved to read and share his readings. In creating the charity with him in mind, our motivation was the belief that reading is important, and we wanted to share it with the hardest to reach.
We realized that there was a big gap in certain primary schools in deprived areas. Around the same time, we forged a partnership with the Prison Reading Groups (PRG).
Like us, PRG seeks to spread the joy of reading in challenging places. Combining our work with children and PRG with prisoners, we run a series of family reading projects across the UK to bond prisoners and their children through books.
When the Daily Express reached out to make Give A Book their Christmas charity, we had no idea where it would lead. They had heard about us through author Anthony Horowitz and shared our ethos that reading is important.
Lady Antonia Fraser kicked off our Christmas Campaign with a simple wish on the Express: “I want everyone to share in the joy of reading,” she declared with delight. “Books save the emotional lives of so many people. When I get to heaven, which is a bit unlikely, I’ll ask, ‘Where’s the library?’”
