As the last beat of the drum song faded away, Donald Keeble, or thejoy by his Anishiaabe name, opened the doors and welcomed people to the newly renovated Museum of the Potawatomi County Community.
Keeble is a tribal member of Forest’s Potawatomi County. He is the director of the museum and the representative of the NAGPRA tribe.
His predecessor initiated the idea of reinventing the museum, but it was Keble and his staff who got to see it through, which was a challenge during a pandemic.
“We wanted to make it more elder and kid-friendly. That was an important part. He had to keep him updated because our tribe has come so much over the past 20 years,” Cable said.
The museum has a wigwam and canoe that people can explore and interact with. The information boards are written in Bodwéwadmi and English.
Multiple exhibits allow people to press buttons to hear how words are pronounced.
The museum begins with an exhibition explaining the history of the tribe…
