MASSILLON, OH – Many artists need peace and quiet while they work, but a select few need ear protection.
Jack Reese LumberJack Chainsaw Art He is one of those artists. He retired in 1998 and now spends his days carving logs into works of art. He uses a chainsaw as his primary tool.
Riece prefers working with pine, especially if the tree trunk has been cut into a stump so that it can be moved.
“These are the things that are the lightest to deal with…these [tree trunks] Much lighter than getting oak or cherry, but it carries the same quality,” Resi said.
Riece works alongside Pat Holbert, business partner and friend of 25 years. Hulbert has also been sculpting since 1998.
Every artwork begins with a process called blocking.

“It’s where you take off the biggest pieces. Then you model and try to perfect the shape. Then you do detailing, where you put the details in the face. You start with a big saw and you keep working until you get to small saws,” Hulbert said.
