Minutes after 6am on Tuesday morning, just as all pens were ready to write how wonderful and incident-free Sting 2022 was and give a glowing account of the world-class production, impeccable sound, tight security and the interesting performances, grade A nonsense displayed behind the scenes.
And what made it almost ridiculous was that the incident was arguably the biggest in Sting’s history. As promised by Sting’s promoter Heavy D, there were no actual fights on stage; no bottles were thrown; there were no shots; and absolutely no one was hurt. But people behind the scenes were running frantically and security forces were behind them, in some cases guns drawn.
Heavy D said that the drama occurred shortly after he left the stage, but did not elaborate. Perhaps at that time, he himself was not even clear about it.
What was apparent was that there were more performers than time allowed, and an effort was made to bring the remaining acts on stage. But with many of those performers carrying what seemed like entire districts of people, onstage and backstage, they were miserable. Add to the mix alleged entourages and artists like Pablo YG and Malie Don, who were billed for the show, and things got messy.
A premature ending left a bitter taste, but it wasn’t enough to erase the goodness, especially from the female artists.
