Duke Student Affairs sees 200 staff departures in two years, student groups impacted by staffing shortages and turnovers

About 200 people have left Duke University’s student affairs office since 2020—a turnover that has left students feeling the effects of staffing shortages, loss of institutional knowledge, and uncertainty about next steps.
About 100 people have moved into positions outside of student affairs and about 100 have left the university altogether since 2020, according to Mary Pat McMahon, vice president and vice dean of student affairs. Those who left the university either retired or took other jobs.
Meanwhile, McMahon said approximately 50 new employees were hired between July 2021 and September 2022.
students Affairs consists Identity and Cultural Centers, Dining, Career Center, DukeReach, Student Health, DuWell, Student Behavior, Psychological Counseling and Services, and Housing and Residential Living. It also includes human resources and event management personnel.
In total, there are about 500 people working under this umbrella, including union and non-union employees. Union employees are mainly engaged in housing, dining and maintenance. Most of the departures, McMahon said, were on the non-union side, which has about 280 employees.
