Popular daytime television show “Dr Phil” is coming to an end after more than two decades on the air.
His host, former psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw, has said he is withdrawing from daytime because “there’s so much more I want to do.”
McGraw, who began his television career on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in the late 1990s, said in a statement released by CBS Media Ventures that he had been “blessed” with a career in daytime television of more than 25 years.
He added: “With this show, we’ve helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers overcome everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and parenting. This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, But as I move on from the day, there’s so much more I want to do.”
Although the 72-year-old did not give specific details of his plans, retirement does not appear to be among the options.
The network said that for the immediate future it will “focus on primetime programming and plans to announce a primetime strategic partnership, scheduled to launch in early 2024.”
McGraw added: “I am compelled to engage with a broader audience because I have great concern for the American family and am determined to help restore clarity of purpose as well as our core values.”
