St. George – A bill on graduation dress revisions among public school students received its first hearing in the 2023 Utah Legislature session.
Student Graduation Dress Revisions Bill, officially designated as SB 103 In the 2023 Utah Legislature, students will be given the opportunity to wear “items of religious or cultural significance” along with the traditional cap and gown.
The graduation dress bill has been sponsored by Sen. Karen Cowan, who told St. George News she’s been working on the bill since early 2022 after a similar bill, Modify the use of the student’s tribal symbolsThrough the legislature without opposition.
“It’s a logical policy in that it asked for transparency in (the school board’s) policy and asked for religious and cultural respect,” Kwan said.
