As I write this Christmas greeting, a huge blizzard has hit a large part of the United States hard. Tribal citizens of South Dakota face extreme winter conditions with some roads impassable. Oglala Sioux Tribe Chairman Frank D. Star Comes Out has declared a state of emergency.
Celebrating Christmas with family and friends may look different this year for those caught up in the storm.
In Minnesota, riders who are part of the Dakota 38+2 Memorial Ride head to Mankato, Minnesota. They will be away from their families for Christmas so they can honor the memory of 38 Dakota men who were executed the day after Christmas in 1862 on the orders of President Abraham Lincoln. They will arrive in Mankato on December 26, where a short ceremony will take place.
Christmas can mean different things to people of different faiths. Whether you are a Christian or not, there is one beginning of the Christmas story of two millennia that remains an admirable wish and goal: “Peace on Earth.”
The Ojibwe believe that “To love is to know peace. You must love yourself in order to love another.”
Regardless of how you celebrate Christmas or any holiday this time of year, we all wish you a peaceful and safe holiday season.
Happy holidays from…
