Ottawa County – Emotional public comment has dominated recent Ottawa County Board meetings, as residents react to several sweeping and controversial changes made earlier this month. As they talk, two different stories are taking shape.

Supporters of the board — led by eight members of the far-right political group Ottawa Impact — have long floated debates based on COVID-19, claiming the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” or challenging the efficacy of face masks and vaccines.
But what emerged as a stronger message was the “divine plan” that many council supporters say was responsible for the August primary that ensured officials’ victories.
“The power that Christ has delegated to you.”
“You have been chosen for this.”
“The Lord says, He will bless all who serve Him, and enemies will lie at His feet.”
But opponents have a different point of view.
“This is Christian nationalism, where religion replaces the state.”
Although many opponents have focused on specific policy decisions made by the board, some of those who spoke during the public comment were also disturbed by the religious rhetoric promoted by the Ottawa Impact – and the growing presence of religion-based commentary in government meetings.
