Brandon Cronenberg’s ‘Infinity Pool’ catches eat-the-rich wave of satire entertainment

TORONTO – When Brandon Cronenberg began writing the script for “Infinity Pool” in 2014, he didn’t know that “resort satire” would become a popular theme in screen entertainment when his movie was released.
A recent wave of blockbusters including movies like “Triangle of Sadness” and “The Menu” and the TV series “The White Lotus” take on an eat-the-rich tone by showing wealthy tourists unleashing their most privileged impulses.
“Infinity Pool” is a horror film that follows an emotionally distant couple as their luxury vacation turns into a nightmare involving hallucinogenic drugs and a murderous crime spree.
Cronenberg’s inspiration for his third feature, which he wrote and directed, came from a trip he took to an all-inclusive some 20 years ago.
“It was a very eerie resort because you never saw the countryside around the resort; you were at this resort,” he said, noting that a barbed wire fence that prevented guests from leaving the venue was a detail he injected into “Infinity Pool.”
And while he says he couldn’t have predicted “the mood of 2023,” he finds it interesting “that all of this is in sync right now.”
Cronenberg believes that the popularity of tourist satire can be attributed to the alarming economic divide and the degree to which people are anxious and frustrated about it.
