Artists jump at chance to celebrate Indigenous culture at music festival near Salmon Arm

Celebrations of indigenous culture need not be limited to one day.
This was part of the thought process behind the recently announced Pellsquepts Spring Winds Music Festival, taking place just west of the Salmon Arm at Pierre’s Point on Saturday, March 18.
Organized by the Salmon Arm Folk Music Society (SAFMS), the new free festival for all ages features a host of indigenous talent.
Secwepémc storyteller and SAFMS youth and indigenous coordinator Kenthen Thomas said it was initially thought the festival could take place on Indigenous Day, June 21. .”
“So we said okay, every day is pretty much indigenous days, you know, especially for the people of Secwepémc… so we thought we’d do it as fast as we can and see what we can put together.”
The idea for the event came from one of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 calls to action, Thomas said, to ensure local indigenous peoples are recognized.
“As part of that, the music society will try to put together an event that highlights some local talent and really shows the indigenous people of this land,” Thomas said, explaining how over the course of about six months, he and SAFMS were able to secure a impressive list of entertainment.
