A year and a half ago, Gabriel Ritter visited Chris Sharp Gallery in Los Angeles hoping to discover compelling new art. He wasn’t expecting to be surprised by the dress.

“This jacket stopped me in my tracks,” he recalls. “It’s almost a long story short. It looks like a punk jacket, or a biker jacket made for a giant.”
As soon as he started examining it, he realized that it was more work than its size.
It was decorated with patches covered in letters and symbols – a mixture of images that evoked the past and present, personal and political traditions, ancient traditions and contemporary popular culture.
“This really caught my eye,” he recalled. Not only was it aesthetically stunning, but it was also a ripping portrait of Native American life and art, in all its complex multiplicity. “It’s a monument to survival,” he concluded.
Ritter was in Southern California from Minnesota interviewing for a manager position Museum of Design and Architecture (AD&A) at UC Santa Barbara.
