Evansville, Indiana – Big changes are coming to the Angel Mounds State Historic Site thanks to two major donations totaling more than $6 million.
The cost will be split between two grants: $4 million will come from the State of Indiana while the rest, $2.5 million, will come through a grant from the Lilly Endowment, part of Eli Lilly and Company’s religious and cultural foundations initiative.
The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites said in a press release last week that it is part of a national effort for museums and other organizations to develop programs that visualize, to some extent, the role of religion in the world.

“This is a huge opportunity for us and the state of Indiana,” CEO and group president Cathy Ferry said in the statement. “This project allows us to produce an authentic experience in collaboration with the people whose story you will tell.”
Angel Mounds, located on the Vanderburgh-Warrick County line near the Ohio River, was once the site of a thriving Native American town. It was occupied from about 1100 to 1450 A.D. in the northern reaches of the Mississippi culture: a network of mound-building Native Americans in the southeastern United States.

During the renovations, the outdoor space will remain open, but ticket prices will be reduced to $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for children ages 3-17.
The Interpretive Center will be closed from now until…
