For African fans, the just-concluded Golden Globes continue to be a disappointment.
It’s been 17 years since any continental film received a Best Foreign Language Film nomination (last being South Africa’s Tsotsi (2005)) and 50 years since we last won (last being Algeria’s Z (1969).
Why is this a big problem? The Best Foreign Feature Film category is often an alternative view of how movies are made, offering a glimpse into the world view of other countries.
If you ask me, Africa has had its own style when it comes to film production and a lot to say as well. That’s why I’m baffled that we haven’t had any recognizable success on the world stage yet.
It’s easy to think of “racism” given the recent admission of past wrongdoing by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the presenters of the award, but it’s not enough of a hurdle.
Undoubtedly, the African film industry lives in an unfavorable environment. Piracy, funding problems, lack of clear regulations, underdevelopment, gag orders, etc. they continue to harass the industry.
