STONEY NAKODA – The Three Wise Men reinvent themselves as the four directions of the medicine wheel in A Stoney Christmas, an annual festive performance that weaves indigenous culture and tradition with the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Instead of gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, the Prince of Peace receives four offerings when Wakâ (the Creator) sends an angel to the characters representing the North, East, South, and West quadrants of the medicine wheel.
This year marks the sixth consecutive performance of the Smalleyes family performance at artsPlace since 2017, excluding 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Director and family matriarch Samantha Smalleyes said the production was born out of a desire to share knowledge of Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda First Nation culture, the family’s love of powwow dancing and carry on the tradition.
“We love teaching other people about our culture,” she said. “In 2016, my husband [Harrum] he was talking about putting on a show for Christmas. All of our children are dancers, just like my husband and I.”
