The first day of the Chinese New Year falls on January 22 this year. Also known as the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year, it is widely celebrated to mark the arrival of spring China and many countries of East Asia.
Families usually gather during this time to share sumptuous meals, while children are often given cash in red packets known as “hong bao”.
The beginning of the lunar year also sees the rotation of the 12-year Chinese zodiac, each of which is represented by an animal.
There are many stories that explain the constellations: one legend says that the Jade Emperor—an important Chinese deity—called all animals to a “great race,” winning the first 12 animals in his favour.
The twelve who made them, in order of appearance, are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
